Sequels

A sequel is a movie that carries on the story of a previously released film. The film trailer for a sequel uses our knowledge of the story and its characters to attract audiences.

Have a look at these trailers – they are all movie sequels.

We can still use the Trailer Trio Analysis tool as a way of breaking down each trailer and critically analysing it, but for a sequel, we also need to talk about how the new film develops the story and characters of the first film or films.

Sequel investigation

Before you watch each trailer, make a mind map of what you already know about the previous film or films. Write down some information about the original film or fims:

  • the names of the main characters
  • where the film was set
  • what the main events of the story were
  • Present tense

After you have watched each trailer, add the new information that you've learnt to your mind maps.

  • are there any new characters? (e.g. who is the character with powers to move leaves in Frozen II?)
  • are there any new settings? (e.g. where do the toys go to when they venture out of Bonnie's house?)
  • how has the story been developed? (e.g. why is the new Shaun the Sheep movie called 'Farmageddon'?!)
  • how have the themes changed: what is the same and what is different? (e.g. the characters are the same in Secret Life of Pets 2, but there's a new baby in the family that is making Max anxious)

Create a character

Choose one of the sequels and use your imagination to create a new character. Draw and label your character to show how he or she will develop the story and themes of the original film story.

For example:

  • Could Anna and Elsa have a secret brother that they've never met?
  • Could the Monopoly pieces come alive and become Woody's enemies?
  • Could Duke's owners hire a dog trainer to address his bad habits?
  • Could Shaun meet a wayward teenage sheep who breaks into the farmhouse and throws a wild party?
